Stipends from IEB for Latin American and Caribbean conservators to attend an intensive workshop on the preservation of iron gal ink on paper
The Conservation and Restoration Department of the Brazilian Studies Institute (IEB) of the University of São Paulo, Brazil is pleased to announce the award of a grant from the Getty Foundation in support of a collection survey and workshop on "The History and Treatment of Works in Iron Gall Ink" between October 20/24, 2008 in São Paulo. Ten stipends will be available for conservators and collection managers from South America to attend the workshop, which will be conducted by conservation scientist Dr. Han Neevel and conservator Birgit Reissland from the ICN in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and with lectures and assistance by conservator Valeria Orlandini, from The Library of Congress, in USA. The program also includes a full day of lectures by local and South American conservators, and practical training sessions.
Conservation professionals with a minimum of three years of experience and currently employed in the conservation field may apply. The selection will be based on the quality of the essay. Please read carefully the following information and send an application in English and the e-questionnaire to the University of São Paulo – Brazilian Studies Institute (IEB), at the specified address at the bottom:
- Personal information: full name, address, e-mail, fax, and phone numbers.
- Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages, please do not attach photos and/or additional information).
- An essay, preferably on the topic of the training workshop (maximum 400 words). The essay needs to written both in English and the original language of the candidate so that it can be reviewed by the selection committee. The selected applicants will present this information as a poster to be exhibited or presented during the symposium day. The format for both the poster and/or presentation should meet the criteria already established by the selection committee.
- Information on the institution where the applicant is employed: name, address, phone numbers, fax, e-mail, the applicant’s position in the institution, conservation tasks carried out on collections and how the applicant plans to share and disseminate the information gained from attending the training workshop and the symposium.
- A letter with the following information:
- An estimated cost of the round-trip economy airfare from your home city to São Paulo, Brazil.
- A statement on how much could the applicant personally contribute to her/his expenses or from other sources of funding such as her/his institution or local foundations. The expenses including transportation, hotel and meals are approximately:
Hotel (double occupancy w/other scholar, US $50/ x 5 nights) US $250.00
Hotel single room occupancy (US$80/ x5 nights) US $400.00
Food and miscellaneous (US $49/day x 6 days) US $150.00
Airfare from the applicant’s city to São Paulo [varies]
Ground transportation, visa, other travel fees [varies]
Scholarship awards will cover hotel, airfare, and materials used in the training only. A limited number of stipends for meals may be available and must be specifically requested.
USP-IEB will provide partial financial support so the maximum number of scholarships can be awarded. All applicants must contribute part of the expenses to complete the total amount required.
